Acoular Workshop

Acoular (www.acoular.org [3]) is an open source framework for acoustic beamforming that is written in the Python programming language. It is aimed at applications in acoustic testing. Multichannel data recorded by a microphone array can be processed and analyzed in order to generate mappings of sound source distributions. The maps (acoustic photographs) can then be used to locate sources of interest and to characterize them using their spectra.

Its features include:

  • several beamforming & deconvolution algorithms
  • time-domain and frequency-domain operation
  • 3D mapping of stationary and moving targets

As a satellite event for 2020 Berlin Beamforming conference [4] to be held on 2-3 March 2020, the department of Engineerung Acoustics sponsors a Workshop on Acoular one day after the conference.

The workshop is designed for 15 participants and is free of charge. If you plan to participate, please register yourself below.


The program will consist of 4 blocks:

9:00 – 10:30 Introduction

  • Short introduction into the theory of beamforming (time domain, frequency domain, necessary data processing steps)
  • Short introduction into Python programming

11:00 – 12:30 Acoular – Hands-on

  • Basic examples, introduction of the data processing block chain
  • Frequency domain beamforming
  • Time domain beamforming

13:30 – 15:00 Measurement application

  • Experimental setup in the anechoic room
  • Measurement and evaluation using Acoular
  • Foreign data import into Acoular

15:15 – 17:00 Advanced applications

  • Moving Sources - Rotating Sources
  • 3D processing
  • Extending Acoular
  • Acoular GUI
